STATISTICS IN DIVERSITY FINAL PROJECT

STATISTICS: A WINDOW TO UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY

University of California, Los Angeles | December 2019

The purpose of this class was to teach students how to apply statistics to social science fields, with an emphasis on using data analytics to study diversity and inclusion.

For the final project, students were given data from a survey conducted on 866 UCLA students that asked a variety of questions on students' race / ethnicity, family background, GPA, feelings on academic performance and social life, and more. Each group was responsible for creating a statistical model that explored the data provided.

Kienna's group chose to study the impact that a UCLA student's perception of ethnic inclusivity had on academic performance, feelings of exclusion, and stress levels. They chose the respective variables from the data set and used a multivariate linear model to study this idea. Kienna was responsible for data cleaning, producing graphs of the project results, and analysis of the interaction effect used in the model.

October 2019

The 2019 Lyft Data Challenge was Lyft's inaugural data challenge event in order to raise awareness about data science at Lyft.

For the first round of the challenge, teams of two were given a set of three large datasets (>1.2 million rows of data total) and asked to estimate the lifetime value of a driver and make business recommendations to the company to improve this value. Kienna was responsible for data cleaning, variable creation, and calculation of the driver's lifetime value.

For the second round, the top 5% of teams (15 teams out of over 300) were invited to the Lyft headquarters to compete in an onsite challenge. This round involved defining "churn rate" and designing an experiment to explore methods to reduce churn.

Kienna was responsible for studying the effects of neighborhood environments on the health of members of the cohort who reside in Hawaii. She extracted census and geospatial data in order to characterize these neighborhood environments through creating nine variables (i.e. population density, number of commuters by car, density of nearby alcohol outlets) and conducting subsequent statistical analyses.
